Pearl and WASSTRIP

What is it?

The Pearl process is a fluidized bed crystallized reactor designed to chemically precipitate phosphorus as struvite from wastewater streams. Feed streams are dosed with magnesium chloride and sodium hydroxide (if pH adjustment is required) before being fed into the reactor where nutrients are crystallized. The Pearl system treats nutrient-rich streams such as centrate streams from dewatering centrifuges. Since 2014, WASSTRIP (Waste Activated Sludge Stripping to Remove Internal Phosphorus), an optional anaerobic treatment add-on to the Pearl treatment, has been available to help increase nutrient recovery by allowing bio-P bacteria to release magnesium and phosphorus in a soluble state. Solutes are then directed to the Pearl reactor, bypassing the anaerobic digestion step.
