Water Reuse and Alternative Water

What you should know…

Water scarcity is driving the use of alternative water sources and, in particular, water reuse. Much like the desalination market, the growth in the water reuse market is happening with no formal announcement heralding its entry into the mainstream water market. Like the desalination market which grew incrementally until a decade later desalination costs had been halved and the global installed capacity increased from 20 million m3 per day in 1995 to 40 million m3 per day in 2005, water re-use is also growing Similarly, the use of other alternative sources of water, such as atmospheric water capture and contaminated groundwater will also continue to grow.

We anticipate that in ten years time water re-use will be the norm and the practice of discharging treated freshwater into a salty sea will only continue in a few locations.

What we can do for you…

With growth in water reuse forecast across all industrial markets and the municipal sector, opportunities exist for incumbent technologies to grow sales and for novel technologies to develop niches within each market. However, in most geographies this growth is starting from a relatively low level. The figure below illustrates the current amount of water reuse undertaken in the USA, and presents the relative contribution of each water reuse application.

Increasing discharge standards, increasing water costs and decreasing volumes and quality of existing water sources are driving heavy industrial water users such as power plants, pulp and paper, food and beverage, chemicals and oil and gas towards internal reuse of process water. Such industries are moving towards generating “designer water” (water which fit the required characteristics for specific processes) from streams previously regarded as a wastewater.
